After a little googling I stumbled over this PDF from Matt @ Last.fm, which gives a wonderful idea of how Last.fm deal with their scaling issues.
While some things won't work for our implementations of products, mainly because we're using Cloud Computing rather than maintaining our own hardware - however there are some very good ideas in here.
Worth a read while you're digesting the last of the mince pies!

How to tell your clients that they are wrong in what they want!
We've two Thecus products in the office, both N5200 boxes, now both dead or dying. The first died about a month ago, and while Thecus are trying to recover the falled raid, it's not playing. It started to report one of the HDD's as broken, which isn't quite true. Then it decided that there isn't a raid there, which is also not true. So that' broken.
So this leaves us one Raid with aaall those lovley files on... which was found this morning flashing on and off in a very
worrying way.... It took about 10 minutes to take out all the disks and realize that it was the base unit that is broken. God knows how many of the disks it's taken with with the dam thing, we'll have to get the other one fixed to fix this one, simply to get another replacement raid to put the dam data on!
Some days back to work after a week off are always fun.
The old Gallery is getting tired, and more importantly a right paint to maintain and keep up to date. I've not found a convincing way to export my photos from Picasa 3 on Ubuntu up to the Gallery2 based site, so I had a little look around.
I suppose I could have gone for the Picasa online galleries, however they are just far to expensive! Flickr has come to the rescue, which while it's not a straightforward to move images from Picasa 3 to Flickr with linux, it's possibble.
First for this treatment are some photos from the Forexx Womens World Open 2009 from Amsterdam

Hurra, we're outa here!
The final of the Spanish Open 2008 was a nice early one today, meaning that it's now quarter to six and we're nearly done packing and everything. If only the replay of the final would hurry up!
Now is the big ponder of what to do tomorrow. It's another holiday here (these lucky Spanish getting two days off so close to Christmas, can you remember the last holiday you had? August, that's when it bloody well was!) so that means nothing will be open, leaving me in a pickle. With nothing open I'm going to be bored, and I'll still want a nice day of being under the whip, and that requires..
In roughly that order. So where to go, if not back to the squash club (which is missing two things on that list, Coffee and Coffee)? The airport, that's where!

My flights about 8pm here (It's GMT here, that's just wrong, it's abroad it should be a different time!) but I'm still contimplating coming to the venue, picking up the bags and heading to the south of the island to the airport. At east I'll be able to get get some new headphones after I did the dumb thing of leasving mine in a taxt!.
So to the airport I shall go, where the coffee is expensive, the guards are armed, and I'll spend all day being maddened by the security announcements.
It's been a while, but after some Complete Scumbag screwed up my previous site, leading it to be blacklisted, I had to wipe it all clean and let the dust settle!

Image galleries willbe back up soon I hope.
